Benton is a small city in Franklin County, Illinois, with a population of about 7,000. Established in 1839 as the county seat, it was named after Missouri senator Thomas Hart Benton. The town grew through coal mining, railroads, and agriculture. Benton is known for its coal mining heritage, the historic Franklin County Courthouse built in the 1870s, and notable events like the 1928 public hanging of gangster Charles Birger.
