About Belleville

Belleville is a city in St. Clair County, Illinois, with a population of about 41,700. Founded in 1814 and incorporated as a city in 1850, it was named from the French phrase meaning beautiful city. Belleville became the county seat after land was donated for the town square. It is known for its strong German heritage and was Illinois’s first major German settlement. After the Civil War, Belleville grew as a manufacturing center and earned the nickname The Stove Capital of the World. The city lies about 14 miles from St. Louis and is close to Scott Air Force Base.
