Founded in 1818 by Rufus Easton and named after his son, Alton is located on the Mississippi River near where the Illinois, Mississippi, and Missouri rivers meet. The city is known for its limestone bluffs, historic Victorian Queen Anne architecture, and its important role in the abolition movement and the Civil War. Alton hosted the last Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858 and was home to Illinois’ first state penitentiary.
