Alton is a city in Madison County, Illinois, with a population of about 25,430. Founded in 1818 by Rufus Easton and named after his son, it is located on the Mississippi River near where the Illinois and Missouri rivers meet. Alton is known for its limestone bluffs, Victorian Queen Anne architecture, and its important role in the abolition movement and the Civil War. It hosted the last Lincoln-Douglas debate in 1858 and was home to the first Illinois state penitentiary.
