Glen Carbon is a village in southwestern Madison County, Illinois, with a population of about 13,500. Incorporated in 1892, it began as part of the Goshen Settlement in 1801. The village’s name reflects its coal mining past, with mines operating until 1958. Glen Carbon is known for its coal mining heritage, railroad history, and World War I memorials. It is bordered by Edwardsville, Troy, Maryville, and Pontoon Beach, near the Mississippi River valley lowlands.
