About Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon is a city in Jefferson County, Illinois, with a population of about 14,500. Founded in 1817 by Zadok Casey, it was named after George Washington’s plantation. The city developed around key roads and a bridge over Casey Creek in the 1820s. In 1848, the Illinois Supreme Court’s first Grand Division moved here, attracting lawyers like Abraham Lincoln. Mount Vernon is known for its historic legal significance and railroad car manufacturing, including the Mount Vernon Car Manufacturing Company established after an 1888 tornado.
