About Mattoon
Mattoon is a city in Coles County, Illinois, with a population of about 16,334. Incorporated in 1857, it developed at the crossing of two railroads in the 1850s and was named after railroad engineer William B. Mattoon in 1861. The town lies near the timberline dividing forested areas and the Grand Prairie region. Known as a railroad junction city, Mattoon has historic ties to Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant. Nearby landmarks include Allison-Cunningham Park, the first public park created in 1858, and the Essex House Hotel, where Lincoln stayed before his 1858 debate. Mattoon is close to Charleston and is roughly 115 miles from St. Louis. The area also has an Amish community nearby.
