About Vandalia Vandalia is a small city in Fayette County, Illinois, with a population of just over 6,000 people. Founded in 1819, it served as Illinois’ state capital until 1839. The city is known for its historic Vandalia State House, built in 1836, which marks its past as the state capital. Vandalia is also the western end of the National Road, the first federal highway in the United States.
